Following a brief history of the FREDA Centre’s history given by the Director of the Centre, Dr. Margaret Jackson, a lunch and a toast to the Centre preceeded the keynote presentation provided by Dr. Emma Cunlife, a Professor in the Allard School of Law at UBC. The title of her presentation was Expertise, myths and stereotypes in family law proceedings. Professor Cunliffe studies how courts decide the facts of contested cases. She is especially interested in the operation of implicit bias, and legal processes regarding gendered and racialized violence, particularly those regarding Indigenous peoples. After the talk, she was presented with a Dreamcatcher created by Cheyenne Stonechild.
